Lionworks Designs : "Light vs the Dark"

We are well into 2014, and I vowed this was going to be my year.  One of the most difficult things I have encountered in my photography has been setting aside the time and resources to do meaningful personal projects.  I have been fortunate to work alongside many fantastic Creatives, and on many amazing commercial productions.  However, I am hungry, I am so very hungry to be doing more and more projects where I am in the driver’s seat, or at least riding shotgun.

James Barricella creates truly stunning hand crafted Lighting Sculptures.  He is an Artist and incredibly positive individual.  When I saw the work he was putting out, I knew that we had to collaborate.  He is based in Hoboken, New Jersey, and while that is clear across the country, sometimes you gotta take a chance.  I had contacted him and filled him in on the projects I had been doing, and my interest to add a photographic level to his work that would push both our creative boundaries.  A few months had gone by since our original discussion, however when I contacted him again, I laid out a vision and timeline in which I hoped to make this creative endeavor come to life.

Logistics:  Hard to accomplish even in your own town.  There are always last minute changes, problems that arise, or someone gets “food poisoning” the night before a shoot.  Trying to make all of the arrangements while already on another project proved to be an incredible challenge.  However, some really hardworking and professional people came to my aid, and we were able to create a body of work that I am very proud of, especially given our timeline and minimal crew.

I want to thank each of these following people, without them, none of this would have been possible.  Furthermore, we met each challenge with a positive attitude and a professional work ethic.  If you ever need a professional addition to your production, every one of these people would serve you well.

The project in its entirety can be seen on my website at www.labierphoto.com As James put it, the series encompasses the conflict that rages in us, among us, and between us all, the Light vs the Dark.  Both sides are equally strong and present in everyone, it just depends on which one you feed.  A very special “Thank You” to Paul D. Fitzgerald at Urban Consign & Design for the location and furniture, without him, none of this would have been possible.

Here are a few of the out-takes with the very talented crew I was fortunate to work with.

Jimmy's first day on set, he liked the big boy photo lighting almost as much as his own.

The very "tactical" Wardrobe Stylist Theo and Model Ellen deep in a quiet moment.
Models make Jimmy a little nervous, he overcompensates by working hard.

Amazing MUA and Hair Stylist James Milligan touching up the wonderful Chloe Moon.

This girl rocked my world!  She was absolutely amazing and totally moved mountains for me!  Thank you Michelle Zhao!

Laying down on the job!

At the end of the 2nd day of shooting, operating on very little sleep, Jimmy tells me how he really feels... "I'm number 1!"

Latest Project "The CAV Rides Again" will be unveiled at the 2013 Cavalry Squadron Ball, next Friday!

Earlier this year I set out to visit my former NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) MSG Sulit, that's Master Sergeant for you non-militarily versed folks, at Fort Carson Colorado.  We served together in Germany and Kosovo from 1999 to 2002.
Those 3 years being an active duty Recon Scout for the US Army were very transformational.  I served with some amazing men, many of whom stayed in and went on to various bases of operations all around the world, obviously including Iraq and Afghanistan.  More than 10 year later, I reconnected with MSG Sulit and proposed a project idea that I had been wanting to do for some time.  He simply said, "Whatever I can do, I will."  With that, I was soon on a plane and bound for Fort Carson's massive training area in Rockies.  I spent 3 weeks with the soldiers of the 1/10 Cavalry.  I shot over 10,000 images and videos, all while eating, sleeping, and participating in the many field training exercises that make our military the mightiest in the world.
As I prepare for the return trip to Colorado Springs, the excitement is building.  I cannot wait to show the Troopers what I have created.  They were very welcoming to one of their own and I appreciate every soldiers' help and willingness to be a part of the project.

Special thanks to:
MSG Sulit
LTC Guthrie
MAJ Barbour
CSM Vogl

The man who helped me get this all together.  MSG Sulit, soon to be Mr. Luis Sulit, thank you for all your years of service!

 "If you ain't CAV!"

Keep a look out for the full project's release, coming very soon!
