We are well into 2014, and I vowed this was going to be my year. One of the most difficult things I have encountered in my photography has been setting aside the time and resources to do meaningful personal projects. I have been fortunate to work alongside many fantastic Creatives, and on many amazing commercial productions. However, I am hungry, I am so very hungry to be doing more and more projects where I am in the driver’s seat, or at least riding shotgun.
James Barricella creates truly stunning hand crafted Lighting Sculptures. He is an Artist and incredibly positive individual. When I saw the work he was putting out, I knew that we had to collaborate. He is based in Hoboken, New Jersey, and while that is clear across the country, sometimes you gotta take a chance. I had contacted him and filled him in on the projects I had been doing, and my interest to add a photographic level to his work that would push both our creative boundaries. A few months had gone by since our original discussion, however when I contacted him again, I laid out a vision and timeline in which I hoped to make this creative endeavor come to life.
Logistics: Hard to accomplish even in your own town. There are always last minute changes, problems that arise, or someone gets “food poisoning” the night before a shoot. Trying to make all of the arrangements while already on another project proved to be an incredible challenge. However, some really hardworking and professional people came to my aid, and we were able to create a body of work that I am very proud of, especially given our timeline and minimal crew.
I want to thank each of these following people, without them, none of this would have been possible. Furthermore, we met each challenge with a positive attitude and a professional work ethic. If you ever need a professional addition to your production, every one of these people would serve you well.

The project in its entirety can be seen on my website at www.labierphoto.com. As James put it, the series encompasses the conflict that rages in us, among us, and between us all, the Light vs the Dark. Both sides are equally strong and present in everyone, it just depends on which one you feed. A very special “Thank You” to Paul D. Fitzgerald at Urban Consign & Design for the location and furniture, without him, none of this would have been possible.
